songs
Notes: This is what I wrote in my journal a day or two after the show.
I first became aware of this show about a month prior via the Frenz.com forum, and there were
rumours of a Neil appearance, but that didn't pan out. However, the night was hosted by the
Flight of the Conchords, and that was more than enough for me, since I love them and hadn't
seen them perform before. They opened and closed the show and played in between the other acts,
too. Sisters Boh and Bic Runga performed. They had pretty voices but I'd say that Bic is a better
lyricist, and Boh a bit more predictable. Rhys Darby, who plays band manager Murray on the FOTC
show on HBO, was there, and he did a bit of his comedy routine and sang "Leggy Blonde" with the
Conchords as the final song. All of the performers were good, but I wasn't familiar with any of
the non-Conchord material, so those parts of the show were a little slow for me. The Conchords
played a couple of songs from the first season of the show, and several new ones that were
hilarious and had the crowd dying. They were just as enjoyable live as they are on the show,
and I'd love to see them at their own full-length gig sometime. It was nice getting to see them
in such an intimate setting as Largo, though.
I really dug the venue. The staff there seemed quite laidback. Clearly firm about the rules, but
not jerks about it. We got there just after 7pm and got our seating assignment, then walked
down the street to La Cienega Kabob House and had an excellent dinner. The service was friendly
and they comped us one of the entrees because it was late getting to the table. There was ample,
delicious hummus and they told us about the parking behind the building that we should use the
next time we come down for a show. It was easy enough to get to from Julia & Thad's place and I
think each of us had a great experience that evening. Just wish the line to the women's restroom
at Largo moved faster. ;-P
